Lynn Rowley, Sculpted by time and elements (LANDSCAPE 2024)
The first image is in Valle de la Luna, Atacama, Chile and shows how desolate parts of the worlds landscape can be. The elements have carved out the rock over countless years, into the shape we see today, whilst the same elements change the shape of the dunes at a much more rapid rate. In this ever changing and dramatic landscape, if you were to return to the same point at another time it would look vastly different. The second image from the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador shows a tree which is slowly succumbing to the elements as it slowly falls down under the relentless pressure of time and the same elements which once sustained it. If you were to return in the future, the tree will likely have lost it’s battle. The third image from Wanaka, New Zealand shows a tree growing up from out of the lake, fighting against the water which, while essential for it’s survival, threatens it at the same time. Creating it’s own little island, the roots holding to the rocks around it, as if holding onto them for it’s survival. If you were to return in the future will it still be growing strong or will the water have claimed it. The fourth image is of the Moeraki Boulders in New Zealand and shows the ancient granite boulders sitting in the sand, which was once sandstone around them, you can see the ripples in the sand from the power of the water as it constantly crashes down shifting the sand. Over time will the boulders eventually succumb to the power of the wind, waves and sand, wearing down ever so slowly until they are but memories. The images all show how nature and the elements shape and change the landscape both in a short time frame of days to years and over the countless passing of decades, centuries and even millennia.
