Louise Faulkner, Tassie fires - recovery (Landscape 2019)

In early 2019, Tasmania experienced prolonged and severe wildfires. I was visiting South West National Park one hot weekend. Temperatures hit the high 30s as westerly winds gusted dustily through valleys. I drove into recently burned and smoking bushland where the earth itself was scorched. Then, overnight, the temperature dropped dramatically with a cool change. Yesterday's smoke hung blue and wetly over mountain ranges. I discovered new growth appearing from areas burned weeks before – evidence of recovery after fire.
