limor bahar, The "Goddess" of Namibia (People and Portrait 2017)
Their elaborately braided hair, skin and clothes covered in a mixture of ground red rock and butter, the women of Namibia's Himba tribe are a striking sight. The Himba believe that the red is beautiful. It also has symbolic meaning as it unites the red colour of earth and blood which is the symbol of life. The hairstyle worn by Himba women is also quite unique. The hair is braided ("weaved") and covered with the specail ochre mixuture called "otjize".
