John Dalton, The Last Race (B&W 2022)

Country race meetings are full of characters. These four photos attempt to capture the essence and shape of the last race of the day, with a focus on the variety of people who make such an event an enduring part of country Australia. The jockeys are great athletes, delicately balanced as they carefully steer half-tonne galloping horses side by side, and then endure post race advice from trainers after failing to run a place. After the race, strappers are reunited with their well-loved horses while miserly punters collect their winnings from patient bookmakers.
