Louise Faulkner, Under Water - Lake Pedder (Single Shot 2019)

The creation of today's Lake Pedder was an important time in Australia's environmental history. The 1970s saw the government revoke Lake Pedder's National Park status to allow for its inundation as part of Tasmania's Hydro Electric Scheme. The public outcry was great, resulting in organised protests and a movement that evolved into the world's first Greens party. The "Pedder Pilgrimage" saw hundreds of people visit the area to experience its unique ecological values before they were lost. This image reflects that loss and speaks to the pressing issue of climate change: submerged landscapes, flora and fauna extinctions and human's need for water. Despite it all there remains a strange beauty to Lake Pedder, a hint of life beneath and captured sky above, as reflected in this image.
