BRIAN WHITE, Winter Garden (B&W 2024)

Miller’s Historic Homestead “Melrose” in Boronia, Victoria, Australia was the former home of James John Miller, the first President of the local Ferntree Gully Shire. The National Trust Heritage Listed building is an example of the late Victorian ‘boom’ era architecture of the 1880’s. It is now part of the Knox Municipal Library and hosts a wide range of local community groups and activities. The wide veranda on three sides of the house and the pergola in the back yard are laced with beautiful wrought iron leaf pattern filigree and the property contained on the street corner within a fleur-de-lis wrought iron fence. The Homestead is nestled in an English style seasonal garden including fruit trees, honeysuckle and daisies flowering in Spring, then agapanthus, roses and irises flowering in Summer, a range of vivid Autumn leaf trees then stark patterns of bare deciduous trees in Winter when these photographs were taken. The black and white tones of these photographs emphasise the cold grey-cloud Winter geometry of buildings and deciduous trees as distinct from the vibrant garden colours of warmer months.
